NBA Betting: Totals, Props and the Price

✓ Updated

Basketball is built for the over/under. Game totals sit in the hundreds of points, the score changes every few possessions, and every regular in the rotation can carry a points, rebounds and assists line of their own. That makes totals and player props the natural NBA markets, and it makes same-game parlays very easy to build, which isn’t the same as cheap. This guide shows how those markets are priced, how to read the margin on a prop in ten seconds, where overtime catches people out, and what the 2026-27 calendar looks like for the Toronto Raptors, Canada’s only NBA team.

⚡ The quick take
  • Totals and props are the core NBA markets; add both sides' implied odds to find the margin.
  • Basketball held 6.78% in Nevada, lowest of the big four sports.
  • Same-game parlays are repriced for correlation; no book publishes their margin.
  • Raptors opened at home to Chicago on October 21, 2026.

Each team plays a regular-season schedule that runs from late October to mid-April, with games most nights of the week. For bettors that’s a steady stream of totals and props, and the same nightly temptation hockey brings. If you bet both, the Lower-Risk Gambling Guidelines count sports betting as one type of gambling, with a suggested cap of four days a month; our bankroll guide has the full set of limits.

Spreads and totals

The main NBA lines work like other sports. The spread handicaps the favourite, usually priced around -110 (1.909) on both sides, which leaves the book about 4.55%. The total is a line on the combined score of both teams.

NBA totals are often set on a half-point, so they can’t push. When a total lands on a whole number, an exact result returns your stake. Worked example, illustrative: C$20 on over 221 at 1.909.

  • Final 112-110 (222): wins, C$38.18 returned.
  • Final 111-110 (221): push, C$20 returned.
  • Final 110-108 (218): loses.

With so many points scored, one late free throw or a meaningless basket in the last seconds can swing a total or a spread. That doesn’t change the maths, but it’s worth knowing before you watch the final minute. Our moneyline, spread and totals guide covers each bet type in depth.

Overtime. Whether overtime counts depends on the market and on the book. A full-game line and a fourth-quarter or second-half line can treat an extra period differently, and so can player props. We found no published Canadian rule that settles this for every book, so read the basketball rules before betting anything shorter than a full game.

The moneyline in basketball

The moneyline just asks who wins. In the NBA, overtime means there’s always a winner, so it’s a clean two-way market. The catch is the price on big favourites:

  • -500 is decimal 1.20, implied 83.3%. Stake C$50 to make C$10 profit.
  • +400 is decimal 5.00, implied 20.0%. Stake C$10 to make C$40 profit.

Computed by us; prices illustrative. Add the two and you get 103.3%, a margin of about 3.2% in this example. One upset at -500 costs five winning bets’ worth of profit. That’s why many bettors switch to the spread on lopsided games, and why big favourites end up as “safe” legs in parlays, which they aren’t: every leg still carries its margin.

🧮 Reading the margin on a player prop

A player prop is a line on one player’s numbers: points, rebounds, assists, three-pointers made. Each prop is a small two-way market, and each one has its own margin. You can find it in ten seconds: convert both prices to implied probabilities and add them.

Prop (illustrative) Over Under Implied total Margin
Points, 22.5 1.87 (53.48%) 1.95 (51.28%) 104.76% 4.54%
Rebounds, 8.5 1.80 (55.56%) 1.95 (51.28%) 106.84% 6.40%
Three-pointers made, 2.5 1.75 (57.14%) 2.00 (50.00%) 107.14% 6.67%

Computed by us; prices illustrative. Margin = 1 - 1/(implied total).

Same player, same game, three different prices for the bet. A prop that looks attractive on one side can carry half again the margin of a main line. If a book shows only one side of a prop, you can’t check the margin at all; prefer markets with both sides listed.

What that means over a season, illustrative: three props a night at C$5 each, on 40 nights, is 120 bets and C$600 of stakes. At a 6.4% margin, the average cost is about C$38.40. The same C$600 on main lines at 4.55% costs about C$27.30. Props aren’t a trap, but they’re a more expensive way to bet the same game. The odds converter does the conversion if a book shows American odds, and the props and futures guide explains how player lines are set.

Same-game parlays and the leg count

A same-game parlay combines several legs from one game: a team to win, a player over his points line, the game over its total. Those legs are correlated. If the star scores 40, the game total and his team’s chances both rise. So books don’t simply multiply the odds; they apply their own adjustments, and no book or regulator publishes the margin that results.

Even ordinary parlays, with independent legs, compound the margin with every leg. Here’s what happens with coin-flip legs priced at -110:

A six-leg ticket lands about once in 64 tries and carries about 24.36% built-in edge. Nevada’s paper parlay-card product held 30.07% of what was bet over twelve months, four times the 7.69% held on sports overall. The parlay betting guide has the full table, and the parlay calculator prices any ticket before you place it.

What basketball holds

In Nevada’s report for the twelve months to July 2026, basketball held 6.78% of the amount wagered, the lowest of the four big North American sports (baseball 6.85%, football 7.29%, hockey 8.73%). Hold is what books kept after results, not the margin on any one line, and it moves from year to year. It’s a useful reminder that even the “cheapest” sport in the table returned less than 94 cents per dollar staked to bettors as a group. Our bookmaker margin guide explains how hold and margin relate.

Futures and the NBA Cup

Futures cover the season’s big questions: the champion, conference winners, award races, and the in-season Emirates NBA Cup, whose group play started on October 30. They pay more because they’re harder to call, and they carry more margin because each market has many outcomes. In an illustrative four-team market priced at 3.00, 3.50, 4.00 and 4.50, the implied probabilities add up to 109.13%, a margin of about 8.36%, against 4.55% on a -110 spread. A championship market with every team listed can run higher still.

Futures also lock up your stake. Money on the champion stays tied up until June, so count it inside your bankroll from the day you place it.

Live betting on basketball

Basketball’s pace makes it one of the busiest in-play sports: scores change every possession and prices reset with them. That speed is what research flags. A 2019 scoping review by Killick and Griffiths in the International Journal of Mental Health and Addiction found in-play betting “has the potential to be more harmful” than other forms because of its fast, continuous bet opportunities, while noting the evidence is not yet definitive.

🍁 Betting the NBA from Canada

The Raptors are the only Canadian team in the league, which makes Toronto games the busiest NBA markets for many Canadian bettors. Price a Raptors line the same way as any other: compare both sides and both books before you bet, and don’t let a home-team preference set the stake. Backing the team you cheer for is fine as entertainment; just keep it inside the same unit size as every other bet, and skip the extra parlay leg that only exists because it’s Toronto.

Our basketball betting page lines up sportsbooks covering the NBA, and the betting sites list ranks them for players aged 19 or over outside Ontario and Alberta. The sportsbook checklist covers licences, payouts and limits, and current welcome offers are on the sports bonus page. In British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, PlayNow is the provincial option; in Quebec, it’s Mise-o-jeu from Loto-Quebec.

FAQ

When does the 2026-27 NBA season start?

League opening night was Tuesday, October 20, 2026. The Toronto Raptors, Canada's only NBA team, opened at home against the Chicago Bulls on October 21. Emirates NBA Cup group play started on October 30, and the regular season's final day is Sunday, April 11, 2027.

How do I find the margin on an NBA player prop?

Convert both sides to implied probabilities and add them. Illustrative: over 22.5 points at 1.87 implies 53.48%, under at 1.95 implies 51.28%. Together that's 104.76%, a margin of about 4.5%. A prop priced 1.75 and 2.00 adds to 107.14%, a margin of about 6.7%.

Do NBA bets include overtime?

It depends on the market and the book. A full-game line, a second-half or fourth-quarter line and a player prop can each treat overtime differently. We found no single Canadian rule that covers every book, so read the basketball rules before betting anything shorter than a full game.

Are same-game parlays good value on NBA games?

They usually cost more than they look. Legs in one game are correlated, so books reprice them with their own adjustments instead of multiplying the odds, and no book publishes the resulting margin. Even on independent legs, a four-leg parlay of coin flips at -110 carries about 17% built-in edge.

What did basketball hold in regulated markets?

Nevada's sportsbooks held 6.78% of basketball wagers over the twelve months to July 2026, the lowest of the big four North American sports in that report. Hockey held 8.73%, football 7.29% and baseball 6.85%.
