⚡ The quick take
  • Each-way = two bets: one to win, one to place at a fraction of the odds
  • Outright markets carry bigger margins than two-way matchups
  • RBC Canadian Open 2026: Bud Cauley won at 263 (-17)
  • Few sportsbooks we cover list golf at all, so check the table

Golf is the most crowded betting market in sport. Instead of two teams, you pick from a whole field, and even a heavy favourite is priced to lose far more often than he wins. That changes how you bet it. Outright winners pay big when they land and rarely do; each-way bets split the stake to pay on a top finish; matchups strip the field down to two players. This page walks through each market with worked C$ examples, the margin you pay on each, and the Canadian event on the calendar. It is written for players 19+ outside Ontario and Alberta, and every number is sourced or labelled as computed.

The main golf markets

  • Outright winner: who wins the tournament. Prices often run into double or triple figures in decimal odds. This is a futures-style market: your stake waits four days for a result. Our props and futures guide covers how outrights are priced.
  • Each-way: a win bet plus a place bet at a fraction of the odds. Covered in detail below.
  • Top finishes: top 5, top 10 or top 20, priced as their own markets.
  • Matchups (head-to-head): which of two golfers finishes better over the tournament or a round. A two-way market, much like a moneyline.
  • Round leader and first-round markets: shorter windows, settled after one round.
  • Props: hole-in-one in the event, winning score, nationality of the winner and similar.

Golf odds are often shown in fractional form, a habit from British books. The odds converter turns 20/1 into 21.00 decimal or +2000 American and shows the implied probability, and our guide to reading betting odds explains the formulas behind each format.

Reading an outright price

Implied probability is the quickest way to make an outright price concrete. It is 1 divided by the decimal odds. A golfer at 11.00 (10/1, +1000) is priced to win 9.1% of the time; at 21.00 (20/1), about 4.8% (computed). Put another way, even the 10/1 favourite is priced to lose roughly nine tournaments out of ten. That is normal for golf, and it is why a run of losing outright bets says little about whether the prices were fair. If you add up the implied probabilities of every golfer in the field, the total comes out well above 100%. The excess is the book’s margin, spread across the whole field.

🧮 Each-way, worked through

An each-way bet is two equal bets in one ticket. The place half pays at a fraction of the win odds for a set number of places. Here is a computed example using place terms of 1/5 the odds for three places, on a golfer at 21.00 decimal (20/1):

Outcome Win half (C$10 at 21.00) Place half (C$10 at 5.00) Total back Net
Golfer wins C$210 C$50 C$260 +C$240
Golfer places 2nd or 3rd C$0 C$50 C$50 +C$30
Golfer finishes outside the places C$0 C$0 C$0 -C$20

Source: sports-betting research pack, section 2.7. Computed example; place odds = 1 + 20/5 = 5.00. Total stake C$20.

Two points matter here. First, the ticket costs twice the unit you pick: C$10 each-way is C$20. Second, the place terms decide the value. More places, or a bigger fraction, pay more often; fewer places or 1/5 instead of 1/4 pay less. Terms vary by book and by event, so read them on the bet slip, not in a promo banner.

What the book keeps on a big field

Every outcome in a market carries a slice of the margin. On a two-way matchup priced at -110 on both golfers, the implied probabilities add to 104.76% and the margin is 4.55%. Add runners and the overround builds up. Even a four-runner market at 3.00, 3.50, 4.00 and 4.50 carries an overround of 109.13%, a margin of about 8.36% (illustrative, computed). A full golf field has far more names than that.

Nevada does not break golf out in its regulator data; it falls outside the football, basketball, baseball and hockey rows. The Gaming Control Board’s catch-all “Other” row held 9.91% over the 12 months to July 31, 2026, against 7.69% for all sports pools. Hold is what books kept rather than a per-line margin, but the direction fits. Our bookmaker margin guide shows how to calculate the overround on any market you are looking at.

Free bets on long odds

Golf is where a free bet keeps the most of its face value. When the stake is not returned with a win, a free bet’s expected value depends on the odds you use it at. Using a 95.45% payout market (computed):

  • At 2.00, a C$10 free bet is worth about C$4.77, or 47.7% of face value.
  • At 5.00, about C$7.64, or 76.4%.
  • At 10.00, about C$8.59, or 85.9%.

Longer odds keep more of the value on average, though they land far less often. Our guide to free bets covers the formula and the minimum-odds terms that come with most free bet offers, and the sports bonus page lists what is live now.

🍁 The RBC Canadian Open

Canada’s national golf championship is on the PGA Tour schedule every June. The tournament itself is in Ontario, at TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley in Caledon; betting markets on it are offered nationally.

Bud Cauley 2026 winner, June 11-14 RBC Canadian Open
263 (-17) Winning 72-hole total in 2026 RBC Canadian Open
262 (-18) Ryan Fox, 2025 winner RBC Canadian Open
June 9-13 2027 dates, same course RBC Canadian Open

Winning scores of 17 and 18 under in back-to-back years give a sense of the course for winning-score markets, but two results are not a trend. Weather, course setup and the field change every year.

Matchups and the withdrawal question

Matchups are the closest golf gets to a normal two-way bet. You pick one of two golfers; the better finisher wins. They avoid the long odds of outrights, but they bring their own settlement questions: what happens if both miss the cut, if they tie, or if one withdraws mid-tournament. Books answer these differently, and some offer a tie as a third outcome. Check the market rules before you place one.

Combining several matchups into a parlay compounds the margin. Four legs at -110, each a true coin-flip, land 6.25% of the time and carry about 17% built-in edge (computed). The parlay calculator shows the combined price before you commit, and the parlay guide shows the hit-rate maths.

Where to bet golf

Golf is a thinner market than the big team sports. Only a handful of the sportsbooks we cover list golf at all, and the comparison table below shows which ones. The offer cards above show their current sports welcome offers for players outside Ontario and Alberta. Some rollover terms set minimum odds per selection, which can rule out short-priced matchups, so read the terms; our guide to sports betting bonuses explains the usual catches.

PlayNow Sports lists golf among its sports, and PlayNow serves British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. For a wider choice, the betting sites list ranks every sportsbook we cover, and our guide to choosing a sportsbook covers licence, markets and limits. Tennis works on a similar head-to-head logic over a long event, see the tennis page, and the sports betting hub links every sport.

Betting responsibly

A golf tournament runs four days and can tie up money in outrights from Thursday to Sunday. Decide your total stake for the week before the first tee, not round by round. Canada’s Lower-Risk Gambling Guidelines suggest gambling no more than 1% of household income a month, on no more than 4 days a month, and with no more than 2 types of games. CCSA publishes the guidelines.

FAQ

How does an each-way golf bet work?

It is two equal bets: one on the golfer to win, one on the golfer to place. The place part pays at a fraction of the win odds, often 1/4 or 1/5, for a set number of places. A C$10 each-way bet costs C$20 in total. Place terms vary by book and by event.

Who won the 2026 RBC Canadian Open?

Bud Cauley, with a 72-hole total of 263, 17 under par, at TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley in Caledon, Ontario, from June 11 to 14, 2026. Ryan Fox won the 2025 edition at 262 (-18). The 2027 event is set for June 9 to 13 on the same course.

What is a golf matchup bet?

A head-to-head bet on which of two golfers finishes better, usually over the full tournament or one round. It is a two-way market, so the margin is close to a standard -110 / -110 line, about 4.55% computed. Check what the book does when a tie or a withdrawal occurs.

Can I bet on golf through a provincial site?

PlayNow Sports, run by BCLC, lists golf among its sports, and PlayNow also serves Saskatchewan and Manitoba players on the same platform. Quebec's Mise-o-jeu is Loto-Québec's sports product. Players outside Ontario and Alberta also see offshore sportsbooks, which are licensed outside Canada.

Why are golf outright odds so long?

Because the field is large and even the favourite usually wins only a small share of the time. Every golfer in the market carries part of the book's margin, so outright markets tend to hold more than two-way bets. Each-way and matchup bets are ways to bet golf with shorter odds.
