⚡ The quick take
Series format matters: a best-of-5 favours the stronger team more than one map
Two-way markets at -110 / -110 carry a 4.55% margin (computed)
VALORANT Champions 2026: LOUD beat Team Vitality 3-1 in Shanghai
Check forfeit and walkover rules before betting lower-tier events
Esports betting looks like any other sports market on the screen: two teams, two prices, a total. Underneath, the structure is different. You bet on maps and series, not periods or halves, and the format of the series changes how often the better team wins. That one detail moves prices more than most bettors expect. This page explains the main esports markets, the series maths that drives them, the margin you pay, and the integrity checks worth doing before you stake anything. It covers players 19+ outside Ontario and Alberta, and every number below is either sourced or labelled as computed.
How esports markets are built
Most competitive titles are played as a series of maps or games. A team that wins two maps in a best-of-3, or three in a best-of-5, wins the match. Sportsbooks build their markets on top of that structure:
Match winner: the team that takes the series. This is a two-way market, the esports version of a moneyline.
Map handicap: a head start or deficit in maps. A favourite at -1.5 maps in a best-of-3 must win 2-0; the underdog at +1.5 covers with a single map win.
Total maps: over or under a line such as 2.5 maps in a best-of-3. Over 2.5 wins if the series goes the distance.
Correct score: the exact series result, such as 3-1. More outcomes means longer odds and a larger built-in margin.
Map and round markets: who wins map one, total rounds on a map, and similar in-play markets.
Outrights: who wins the tournament, priced like any other futures market. Our Canadian sports betting guide covers how futures fit next to single-game bets, and the esports betting guide goes deeper on titles and formats.
Odds can show as decimal or American depending on the site. If you want to read a line both ways, the odds converter switches between formats and shows the implied probability, and our guide to reading betting odds covers the formulas.
🧮 Why the series format moves the price
The stronger team does not win every map. Over a longer series, though, its edge has more room to show, so its chance of taking the match goes up. Here is a computed example with one assumption: Team A wins each map 60% of the time, and every map is independent.
Single map: Team A wins 60% of the time.
Best-of-3: Team A wins 2-0 (0.6 x 0.6 = 36%) or 2-1 (2 x 0.6 x 0.6 x 0.4 = 28.8%), so 64.8% in total.
Best-of-5: Team A needs three maps before Team B does: 0.6³ x (1 + 3 x 0.4 + 6 x 0.4²) = 68.3%.

The practical takeaway: a price that looks right for a single map can be off for a best-of-5, and the other way round. Before you compare two lines, check which format the event uses. It also explains why map handicaps exist. Once the favourite’s series price gets very short, -1.5 maps gives a longer price on the same opinion, at the cost of losing the bet if the underdog takes even one map.
What the book keeps
Esports prices carry the same built-in margin as any other sport. On a two-way market priced at -110 on each side (1.909 in decimal), the implied probabilities add up to 104.76%, and the book’s margin is 4.55%. More outcomes mean a bigger overround, as the table shows.

Regulators do not publish esports figures in Canada. In Nevada, the Gaming Control Board’s statewide report for the 12 months to July 31, 2026 shows a hold of 7.69% across all sports pools and 9.91% for its catch-all “Other” row, which covers everything outside football, basketball, baseball and hockey. Hold is what books actually kept, not the margin on each line, but the gap is worth knowing. Our bookmaker margin guide shows how to work out the margin on any market yourself.
🍁 The esports calendar
Canada has no esports league in the way it has the NHL or the CFL, so the calendar follows global tournaments. The most recent major final in our research pack is VALORANT Champions 2026.
Tournament schedules for other titles change often and many are announced late. Check the organiser’s official page for dates and formats before betting on an outright, and remember that your stake on a tournament winner sits with the book until the final is played.
⚠️ Integrity and information
Esports carries checks that the big leagues mostly handle for you:
Forfeits and walkovers. If a team withdraws or a match is awarded without being played, settlement depends on the book’s rules. Read them before you bet, especially on smaller events.
Roster changes. Line-ups can change close to a match, and coverage of lower-tier teams is thin. A price may not reflect a late substitute.
Technical pauses and replays. A map can be paused or replayed after a technical problem. How a book treats bets placed before a replay varies by operator.
Lower-tier events. Smaller tournaments get less scrutiny and less public information. Smaller stakes suit them better.
None of this makes esports betting unusual in principle. It means the information gap between you and the price is often wider than in the NHL or the NBA.
Live betting between rounds
In-play markets on esports move fast: round by round, sometimes faster. Killick and Griffiths’ 2019 scoping review in the International Journal of Mental Health and Addiction found that in-play betting “has the potential to be more harmful” than other forms because of its fast, continuous bet opportunities, though the authors say the evidence is not yet definitive. If you bet live, decide your stake before the series starts, not between rounds. Our guide to live betting and cash out explains how in-play prices and cash-out offers are set.
Parlays across several esports matches compound the margin the same way as in any other sport. Four two-way legs priced at -110, each a true coin-flip, land 6.25% of the time and carry about 17% built-in edge (computed). The parlay calculator shows the combined odds and the return before you place one, and the parlay guide breaks down the hit rates.
Offers and where to bet
The offer cards above and the comparison table below list the sportsbooks that carry esports markets for players outside Ontario and Alberta. Many sports welcome bonuses come with rollover at minimum odds, and some exclude esports from the qualifying bets, so read the terms. Our guide to sports betting bonuses explains how rollover works, and the full list of current offers sits on the sports bonus page. For an overall ranking, the betting sites list scores every sportsbook we cover. The provincial options, PlayNow in British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba and Mise-o-jeu in Quebec, publish their own sports menus.
If you also follow traditional sports, the soccer page and the basketball page use the same market logic with different formats. The sports betting hub links every sport we cover.
Betting responsibly
Esports audiences skew younger than most sports, and the age line here is 19+ without exception. Canada’s Lower-Risk Gambling Guidelines suggest gambling no more than 1% of household income a month, on no more than 4 days a month, and with no more than 2 types of games; sports betting counts as one type. The guidelines are published by CCSA.
Raising stakes to win back a losing night is a recognised warning sign. Help is free and confidential: Gambling Support BC at 1-888-795-6111, the Saskatchewan Problem Gambling Help Line at 1-800-306-6789, the Manitoba Problem Gambling Helpline at 1-800-463-1554, and Jeu : aide et référence in Quebec at 1-800-461-0140. Every provincial line, and the tools for setting limits, are on our responsible gambling page. Our bankroll guide shows how to size stakes as units rather than gut feel.
Yes, for adults. Single-event betting became lawful for provinces to offer on August 27, 2021. Players outside Ontario and Alberta also see sportsbooks licensed outside Canada, which list esports markets. Those sites are not covered by provincial protections such as Game Break. The age line on this site is 19+.
What is a map handicap in esports betting?
A handicap applied to the number of maps a team wins in a series. A team at -1.5 maps must win a best-of-3 two maps to nil to cover. A team at +1.5 maps covers if it wins at least one map. Half-map lines cannot push, so the stake is never returned on a draw.
Why does a best-of-5 series change the odds?
Longer series give the stronger team more chances to show it. In a computed example where one team wins each map 60% of the time, it takes a single map 60% of the time, a best-of-3 about 64.8% and a best-of-5 about 68.3%. Prices on series markets move to reflect that.
Who won VALORANT Champions 2026?
LOUD beat Team Vitality 3-1 in the final in Shanghai. The event ran from September 24 to October 18, 2026, with a US$2.25 million prize pool and US$1 million to the winner. It was LOUD's second Champions title, according to the official VALORANT Esports event page.
Are esports bets riskier than other sports bets?
The maths is the same: margin, implied probability and parlay hit rates work exactly as in hockey or soccer. What differs is information. Lower-tier events get less coverage, roster news moves late, and live markets move fast between rounds. Smaller stakes and fixed limits suit that.
