⚡ The quick take
Two families: 60-minute lines ignore OT; standard lines include OT and shootout
Puck line is usually +/-1.5, so it can't push
NHL 2026-27: Sept 29 to April 10, 84 games per team
Hockey held 8.73% in Nevada, the highest of the big four sports
Hockey is Canada’s betting sport, and it has one quirk that catches more bettors than any other: overtime. The same Leafs-Canadiens game can win one ticket and lose another, depending on whether the market counts the extra five minutes and the shootout. We read the settlement conventions, pulled the 2026-27 schedule from the NHL’s own releases and lined up what books actually kept on hockey, so you know what each line means before you pick one.
🍁 The Canadian angle
Seven Canadian teams play in the NHL: the Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators, Winnipeg Jets, Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers and Vancouver Canucks. None reached the 2026 Stanley Cup Final, which Carolina won 4-2 over Vegas, closing it out with a 3-0 win in Game 6 in Las Vegas. Jordan Staal took the Conn Smythe.
The 2026-27 season is the longest in decades and the earliest ever to start, per the NHL’s schedule release.

5 of 12Canadian teams in the PWHL for 2026-27 The Hockey News, Oct 2, 2026
The women’s game adds a second Canadian betting calendar. The PWHL’s 2026-27 season runs December 5, 2026 to April 18, 2027 with 12 teams, five of them Canadian: the Toronto Sceptres, Montreal Victoire, Ottawa Charge, Vancouver Goldeneyes and the new PWHL Hamilton. The league adds Eastern and Western conferences and expands its playoffs from four teams to eight. Coverage of PWHL markets varies a lot from book to book, so check before you count on it.
How hockey markets settle
Every hockey bet belongs to one of two families, and the market label tells you which.
60-minute (regulation) lines are three-way: home, draw, away. Only the first 60 minutes count. A game tied 2-2 after three periods is a draw for this bet, whatever happens next.
Standard lines (moneyline, puck line, totals) usually include overtime and the shootout. For the final score and the total, the shootout winner is credited one goal. A game that ends 2-2 and goes to a shootout is recorded as 3-2 for these markets.
The regular-season format sets this up: 60 minutes in three 20-minute periods, then a five-minute 3-on-3 overtime, then a shootout. In the playoffs, overtime runs in full 20-minute periods and there is no shootout.

A Canadian story shows why the label matters. A bettor on OLG’s PROLINE in Ontario lost a three-game parlay of ties because that product records a hockey tie on regulation plus five-minute overtime, excluding the shootout. One game was settled in overtime, so the “tie” he expected never counted. Different products, different definitions: read the rules on the exact market. Our NHL betting guide walks through one game settled six different ways.
🧮 What each line costs
Three outcomes means more room for margin. Here is the maths, worked by us from the formulas in our bookmaker margin guide.
Margin = 1 - 1/overround. The -110 row applies to the puck line and totals when both sides are priced at -110. Source: Computed from published odds formulas; three-way and futures odds are illustrative.
The 60-minute line pays more when it lands, because a regulation draw is a real outcome. It also carries a heavier built-in cost in this example: 6.38% against 4.55% on a two-way line. Stanley Cup futures sit higher again, and they tie up your stake from the day you bet until June.
What books actually kept tells the same story. Over the 12 months to July 31, 2026, Nevada’s sportsbooks held more on hockey than on any other major sport.
Hold isn’t the same as the margin on any single bet, but it’s real money from a regulator, and hockey sits at the top. If you’re comparing prices, the odds converter turns any American line into decimal odds and an implied probability.
The puck line and totals
The puck line is hockey’s spread, almost always set at 1.5 goals. Backing the favourite at -1.5 needs a win by two or more; empty-net goals late in the game often decide it. The underdog at +1.5 covers with a win or a one-goal loss. Since a shootout winner gets one goal, a shootout game always finishes one goal apart, so the -1.5 side can’t cover in a shootout.
Totals are the combined goals line. Half-goal totals (5.5, 6.5) settle cleanly; a whole-number total can push, and the stake comes back. If the shootout counts as one goal, a 2-2 game that goes to a shootout lands on 5 for settlement. Our explainer on moneylines, spreads and totals covers the same mechanics across sports.
Live hockey and parlays
Hockey moves fast in-play: a power play, a pulled goalie or an early goal resets the price in seconds. A scoping study by Killick and Griffiths found in-play betting “has the potential to be more harmful” than other forms because of its fast, continuous bet opportunities, though the authors say the evidence isn’t yet definitive. Our guide to live betting and cash out shows how to work out what a cash-out offer is really worth.
Parlays are where hockey nights get expensive. Each leg multiplies the odds, and the margin compounds with them.

Where the offers fit
The cards above show every sportsbook we cover that lists ice hockey, for players aged 19 or over outside Ontario and Alberta. The full ranking sits on the betting sites page, and current welcome offers, free bets and boosts are on the sports bonus page. Before you claim one, read how rollover at minimum odds works in our sports bonuses guide: many offers push you toward parlays, which carry the compounding edge shown above.
In British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, PlayNow is the provincial option; in Quebec it’s Mise-o-jeu. The books on this page are licensed outside Canada, so provincial tools such as Game Break don’t reach them. The sports betting hub explains the wider picture.
Bet hockey with limits
An 84-game season means a game nearly every night from September to April. The Lower-Risk Gambling Guidelines suggest gambling no more than 4 days a month and no more than 1% of household income. Set a deposit limit before the first puck drops, and treat raising stakes to win back a bad night as a warning sign, not a plan. Our bankroll guide shows how to size stakes, and the responsible gambling page lists every provincial helpline. In B.C., Gambling Support BC answers 24/7 at 1-888-795-6111.
Does a hockey moneyline include overtime and the shootout?
Usually yes. The standard moneyline, puck line and total normally include overtime and the shootout, with the shootout winner credited one goal. The 60-minute or regulation line is the exception: it is three-way and ignores everything after the third period. Check the market label, because each book writes its own rules.
What is the puck line in hockey betting?
A handicap of 1.5 goals. The favourite at -1.5 must win by two or more; the underdog at +1.5 wins the bet if it wins or loses by one. Because the line ends in .5, it can't push. If the game goes to a shootout, the winner is usually credited one extra goal for settlement.
When does the 2026-27 NHL season start and end?
It opened on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, the earliest start in NHL history, and the regular season ends on Saturday, April 10, 2027. Each team plays 84 games, up from 82, for 1,344 games in total. The playoffs start the following week.
Can I bet on the PWHL?
Some books list it, many don't, so check the hockey menu before you deposit. The 2026-27 PWHL season runs December 5, 2026 to April 18, 2027 with 12 teams, five of them Canadian. Players need to be 19+ and outside Ontario and Alberta for the books on this page.
Why is the 60-minute line priced differently?
It has three outcomes instead of two, so the margin is spread across three prices. In an illustrative 60-minute market priced 2.20 / 4.00 / 2.75, the overround is 106.82% and the margin about 6.38%, against 4.55% on a two-way line at -110 on both sides.
